Experts from the European Southern Observatory in 2020 found a black hole, which was supposed to be closest to the planet Earth. Study leader Thomas Rivinius noted that it was then located at a distance of 1000 light years from us in a triple system called HR 6819.

However, not all scientists agreed with this conclusion. So, Julia Bodensteiner believed that HR 6819 is actually a system consisting of two stars. One of these stars, as it were, “feeds” on the material of the other.

additional research. Two groups of scientists took part in them. They used the VLT and VLTI telescopes of the European Southern Observatory for observations.

During the analysis, it turned out that HR 6819 is still a binary system of stars. According to Julia Bodensteiner, they managed to detect this system shortly after one of the stars “sucked” the atmosphere out of the other. This phenomenon is sometimes called “star vampirism”. The research team plans to continue studying the HR 6819 system to learn more about the “vampirism” of stars.
