Mosquitoes are carriers of microplastics

This conclusion was reached by Russian scientistsExperts from the Biological Institute of TSU, thanks to the experiment, were able to assess whether mosquitoes are able to tolerate microplastics. The study involved blood-sucking yellow fever mosquitoes. Read more about the results in the article.DiscussMosquitoes are vectors of microplastics

As Anastasia Simakova, head of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Biological Institute of TSU, points out, it was mosquitoes that were chosen for the experiment for several reasons. First of all, these are insects with complete metamorphosis (from egg to adult). Also, during the first three stages they are in the water and only by the fourth (last) stage they move to land. Scientists have suggested that mosquitoes can accumulate microplastics and affect its transfer from a reservoir to another environment.
