According to the BBC, the flock spent three months with bionic eyes. Scientists implanted them surgically behind the retina. The purpose of the sheep trials was to see if the new Phoenix 99 device caused any adverse reactions. According to the researchers, the animals tolerated the bionic eye well. Now an application has been submitted to start human trials.
Phoenix 99 transmits images to the retina wirelessly in the form of electrical signals. After that, they are processed by the optic nerve and redirected to the brain. The device can bypass faulty retinal cells and activate those that are still working.
