Longer lightning was not recorded in the entire history of observations. She was spotted in the southern United States on April 29, 2020. Journalists noted that the length of lightning is equivalent to the distance between London and Hamburg. The previous record was 709 ± 8 kilometers.

Another lightning record was distinguished by its duration. It turned out to be the longest: it lasted 17.102 ± 0.002. Lightning was seen during a thunderstorm over Uruguay and northern Argentina on June 18, 2020. Interestingly, the previous record was set in the same place (16.73 seconds).

Scientists noted that, most likely, longer and longer lightnings occur in nature, but for more advanced technologies are needed to fix them.
