New magnetic materials will help to create engines of the future

Any engine converts the incoming energy to move the vehicle. Usually this is a fairly energy efficient process, but even it can be improved. But if you consider the fact that according to statistics of the University of Chicago in the U.S. only 50% of all energy is generated with engines, even a small improvement will significantly save. And recently, scientists have developed a special magnetic material to help in the establishment of the Ltd. motors of the future.

In order to convert electric energy into kinetic energy for movement of all processes occur under the influence of a magnetic field. But the more the engine speed, the greater its temperature and eventually part of the energy is simply dissipated as heat.

But what if to make so that the material is not heated? A group of scientists headed by Professor of materials science and engineering, Carnegie Mellon Michael McHenry wants to solve this problem by using synthesis of metallic amorphous nanocomposite materials (MANCs). This class of soft magnetic materials, which are effective in conversion of energy at high frequencies, allowing a decrease in the size of the engine to provide comparable to larger counterparts power.


The process of creating a MANC

Currently, the motors are mainly made of steel and silicon. MANCs are an alternative to these materials because of their high resistance they do not heat up as much and can rotate at much higher speed.

“As a result, you can either reduce the size of the engine at a given power or make the engine higher power for the same size.”

For the synthesis of MANC, the researchers use liquid metal alloys, which harden at extremely high temperatures. Thanks to this material and receives the new unique properties.
