Video will help neurostimulation for epilepsy and protect from depression

Different processes in our brains, despite a rather good understanding of the physiology and anatomy of the body is still a mystery. In particular, it concerns a condition like epilepsy and various disorders psihoemotsyonalnoe sphere. In this case, there are many pharmaceutical drugs, however they do not always give the desired effect. And recently a group of researchers from the United States conducted a very interesting work, according to which direct electrical stimulation of certain areas of the brain can help with epilepsy and rescue from depression.

Very interesting work, wrote the publication Current Biology. According to available information, the experiment involved 25 people suffering from epilepsy. During a special surgical operation in the frontal lobe of the brain (and more specifically, in the region of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex, located just above the eyes) was implanted electrodes, which was to identify areas of the brain responsible for the existence of the attacks.

In the end it turned out that almost all of the subjects almost immediately after connecting the electrodes of said “pleasant experience.” Those people who have observed the signs of depression, left them over. In addition, the patients had no symptom of epilepsy. Immediately after cessation of exposure, all negative symptoms return. In order to ensure the loyalty of their assumptions, experts conducted a re-connection electrodes in the same area and have received identical previous results.

At the moment of implementing the procedures in General medical practice out of the question, however, the data obtained may help to develop new treatment methods based on the so-called “deep stimulation of brain structures”. In addition, there are methods of transcranial brain stimulation (i.e., non-invasive effects). Therefore, information about the areas that are responsible for certain processes, yet is extremely useful for the treatment of several diseases of the Central nervous system.
