Volvo and Baidu are working together on a new unmanned vehicle

Today, there are already a lot of developments in the field of creating self-driving cars, but the market is still not formed and a leader is not defined. Naturally, many would like to take the main positions in a booming industry. Some companies even combine their efforts. As, for example, giants such as Volvo and Baidu, which have signed an agreement on the issue of unmanned car “in the near future”.

According to reports, the company will divide responsibilities in order to speed up the production of driverless cars.

“The main idea is to as quickly as possible to develop a car. We will be responsible for the development of the automotive platform and the integration of it hardware, and Baidu in the software and all that is connected with it.” — said the head of Volvo, Hakan Samuelsson.

It is worth noting that this summer, Chinese company has presented its updated management platform for auto and navigation systems Apollo 3.0. The platform is open source and it’s been used for over 100 different companies. So the experience Вaidu very good.

In addition, according to the Bloomberg edition, the collaboration has a number of advantages. For example, right now most companies just “remake” their stock cars to unmanned, which leads to some problems with positioning in the market and difficult to move. In this case we are talking about more ambitious, but at the same time easy integration to create the cars of the fourth level of autonomy. The fourth level involves a completely Autonomous movement of the car, without any human intervention.

That is why, according to Hakan Samuelsson, the car may “be slightly different from the usual us cars.” Most likely this refers to not only the appearance but also the inner workings of the salon. The fourth level of autonomy imposes certain limitations, so that the car can move only on highways or other special areas, but not urban traffic. The company States that by 2025, want to occupy a third of the global market of unmanned vehicles.
