Former Apple engineers introduced a new sensor for self-driving cars

Aeva, a California startup from This view, was created only last year, but has already built “version of the LIDAR is a new generation,” as two of its founders. LIDAR is a technology of forming three-dimensional map, which is used in self-driving cars to estimate distances to objects and the view of the road in front of them. Recently the company presented its product: a tiny capsule that more accurately measures objects in each situation, as well as their distance and speed. It will help future Autonomous cars.

“Usually you have a separate LIDAR, a separate camera and a separate motion sensors, which merge in the Central computational box,” says Soroush, Salehian, co-founder of Aeva. “Our product has access to the lower levels of data. We can measure the pixels on certain objects, such as the human hand. We can measure the speed of the pedestrian or object and to predict its future movement accurately enough”. Salehian says product Aeva is not the improvement of artificial intelligence as such. Rather, it is a mixture of hardware and software that better captures data from the environment.

New technologies for new Autonomous vehicles

Version LIDAR from Aeva not only surpasses its counterparts that exist in most self-driving cars on the roads, but is a light box with low power consumption, which also includes other types of sensors and cameras needed for Autonomous vehicles. This is essentially superior pair of eyes for algorithms AI, which govern self-driving systems on the road today. Aeva hopes that its product, which it calls 4D LIDAR system will become the industry standard for the industry and will find commercial application.
