Blocking just one protein helps prevent diabetes

Many diseases develop due to various genetic disorders. And influencing our genes and the proteins they encode, the emergence of some diseases can be prevented. Not long ago a group of experts from the Medical center children’s hospital in Cincinnati (USA) found a way to prevent the development of diabetes type II diabetes and obesity, blocking only 1 protein.

“Wonderful” is the name of the protein Argonaute 2 (Ago2). And it inhibits the RNA synthesis in the liver, maintaining the energy balance, preventing the development of fatty hepatosis liver, diabetes type II diabetes and obesity. As the researchers report, Ago2 protein slows down the metabolism and improves the liver’s ability to metabolize foods that are high in fat.

Protein research is at a very preliminary stage, but the first experiments in mice have already proved their efficiency. During the experiments, the animals were divided into 2 groups: the first received no treatment, while the second was blocked Ago2 protein synthesis in the liver. Both groups received the same diet with a high fat containing foods that prolonged use can cause the development of diabetes 2 type. As a result, parts of animals from group 1 started to develop obesity and diabetes, while the results of the experimental tests of the 2 groups indicated stable indicators of lipid metabolism and signs of obesity with diabetes in mice was not observed. As stated by one of the authors, Dr. Takahisa Nakamura,

“Discovery of Ago2 participation in metabolic processes is extremely important and it brings together existing data on the synthesis of various compounds in the liver and energy metabolism. We believe that our data will be the basis for a new kind of therapy in patients prone to obesity and development of diabetes mellitus type 2.”
