Racing drones have become popular not so long ago, but the artificial intelligence was determined to get around people and in this kind of activity. Today Drone Racing League (DRL), one of the foremost organizations, which wants to turn the race on drones in the new NASCAR, announced a new competition for teams of people who will need to develop pilots in the face of artificial intelligence.
Thanks to the support of aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, DRL wants to attract developers from around the world, including students and enthusiasts from the world of unmanned drones. They will have to create an AI capable of flying on one of the standardized quadcopters DRL in difficult races without prior programming or observation of the person. The team will compete in the upcoming season, DRL 2019, racing against each other on the same race tracks that people-pilots.
A race of artificial intelligences
The first winning team that will win a professional pilot, the person will receive a reward of 200 000 dollars and the total prize Fund will be about $ 2 million. Will it have it? In 2019 is unlikely. Many institutions are developing Autonomous pilots for quadcopters, but even the most advanced of them lose professionals among the people.
Some observers may ask and what business to Lockheed Martin prior to this project? In the end, Lockheed is one of the world’s largest producers of weapons, and AI controlled quadcopters have long represented the weapon of the future. Drones with AI could be used for surveillance and other purposes, and an even greater fear is the possibility of error artificial intelligence on the battlefield.
And yet, large corporations long history of initiation of such events for the development of ideas and talent. Teams can develop AI systems for racing, but these technologies are dual purpose, so they can repurpose for other purposes. Each team will receive a mentor from Lockheed, who will direct the progress, and perhaps among the prizes will also be invited to work at Lockheed.

DLR happy with the race in artificial intelligence drones. It would seem, and then Lockheed Martin?
