In Japan for the first time raised platelets in vitro

The creation of artificial blood and its elements would solve a lot of problems and saved hundreds of lives. And, it seems that a group of researchers from Japan have succeeded. They were able in vitro to grow cells of blood and everything else, do not cause rejection reaction.

Responsible for the development of scientists from the applied research Center iPS cells at Kyoto University (CiRA). Scientists were able to create blood cells from a patient’s own cells. To create cells, and then experiments on mice took several years, but now experts are convinced of the safety of his techniques and have already applied to the Ministry of health to begin clinical human trials. As explained in an interview with RIA Novosti a representative of Kyoto University Hiroyuki of Wadham,

“From the patient’s blood, namely leucocytes, created iPS cells, artificial multifunctional cells from which it is theoretically possible to grow any type of cell in the human body. Then grow the cell line megakaryocytes — giant cells of the bone marrow that form platelets. They would not normally grow, but we have ensured that megakaryocytes have the ability to share. After a few steps of them are created by platelets, which shimmer in the patient.”

At the moment the main problem of artificial cell elements for transfusion is that after the transfusion starts graft rejection and blood is perceived as a foreign body. Japanese scientists have managed to avoid it and the main thing is that the method proved its efficiency on humans.

“Our goal is to conduct clinical trials during the year. But we must obtain the consent of the patient. So it is difficult to predict how long it will take time. Experimental transfusion will be carried out by one person with aplastic anemia. We continue research on the creation of platelets to allow blood transfusion to a wide range of patients.”
