17 August 1982 released the world’s first CD-ROM*. Order Philips has made it the factory of the record company Polygram, located in Langenhagen near Hanover, Germany. Honor of being the first published CD was awarded to the ABBA album “The Visitors”.
CDs developed by Sony and Philips in 1979 whose objective was to create a new format of digital optical audio discs. Initially it was assumed that the capacity of one CD with a diameter of 115 mm will be one hour sound. But the “official legend” says that the bar raised to 74 minutes in order to drive a fully fit Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
CD
CDs are not immediately gained popularity, primarily because of the high prices at first. However, by the end of the century they were the main music and then computer media.
Like many other things of the past, the CD fell victim to the Internet: sales of CDs began to decline with the advent of online stores and services where you can listen to music without downloading.
* Of course, before there were prototypes of the CD, but on this day, the factory was the first commercial disc.
17 August 1970 went into space station “Venus–7”, which is the world’s first handed information from the surface of Venus. Starting from the cosmodrome “Baikonur”, the apparatus has reached the “sisters of the Earth” for four months and for the first time in history, made a successful landing on another planet. All previous expeditions had been unsuccessful: “Venus–3” was not able to convey anything, obviously, because of the destruction (but has taken a “souvenir” for friendly Venusians — metal globe of the Earth), and “Venera–4 and Venera–5” was simply crushed.
One of the most challenging tasks for engineers is to ensure the strength of the probe: he had to withstand temperatures of 500 degrees and a lot of pressure to 100 atmospheres. Because of this, the Cabinet had to make out of titanium.
“Venus-7” the eyes of the artist
After landing “Venera–7” was able to work on the surface for 23 minutes, after which the instruments are gone one after the other. During this time managed to hold many dimensions and, in particular, to determine the temperature and pressure is 475 degrees with 90 atmospheres. It does not leave any hope for a quick colonization of celestial bodies.
August 17, 2005 introduced the world’s first hard drive with perpendicular recording, it was created by Toshiba engineers. This event may seem boring and important only to specialists, but its effects are felt every computer user: a new principle of recording gave a powerful impetus to the increasing capacity of hard drives.
Before data were recorded parallel to the surface of the magnet plate and at a certain point, engineers ran into a “ceiling” — to further increase the density of information on the disks was impossible. And then remembered about the other method of record which is known since the 70-ies of the last century. The recording density soared by 30 percent even in the first samples. And the theoretical limit seems to be order. Thanks to perpendicular recording hard drives continue to break records capacity, already with 8 or even 10 terabytes.
The first Toshiba product made by new technology, has become the small 1.8 inch hard drive with one plate, which was placed 40 gigabytes of data.
