Samsung announces world’s first 5G modem for smartphones

Samsung Electronics announced the development of the Exynos modem 5100. According to the manufacturer, this is the first industry-5G-modem, fully compliant with 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project).

The modem supports the most recent specification of New Radio 5G (5G-NR). As the modem is in the current “system-on-chip” Exynos 9810, used in the flagship Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note9, the new Exynos 5100 is based on 10-nanometer manufacturing process, and supports on-chip networks such as 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and 4G LTE.

More important, however, that the modem is fully compatible with the spectrum below 6 GHz and mmWave defined by the 3GPP standard. As a result, theoretically, the chip can provide speed up to 2 Gbps when you use frequencies below 6 GHz and up to 6 GB/sec mmWave. This in 1.7 and 5 times faster compared to the predecessor.

Samsung plans to begin shipping the Exynos modem 5100 partners in late 2018.
