28 Jul 2005 Microsoft reported the sale of 100,000 copies of Windows XP Starter Edition. It was a very stripped-down version of the most popular operating system, and it was intended for developing countries: Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and others. It was assumed that this OS will help learn computer literacy to people of modest means who cannot afford the full Windows.

Functionality Windows XP Starter Edition was extremely reduced. At the same time you can run up to three programmes and to open up to three Windows in each, the screen resolution was limited to 1024×768 dots, the license allowed to use the system only on low-cost Intel Celeron and AMD Duron, or Sempron, as well as set the limits on RAM (512MB) and hard disk drive capacity (120 GB). In addition, the Starter Edition was useless in the corporate environment because it does not support Network neighborhood and work in the domain. Such “cruelty” partly offset “exclusive” Wallpapers and screensavers specially prepared for each country.

Most likely, the lion’s share of the sales was pre-installed copies of the operating system. It would be difficult to explain the success of the boxed version of the OS, which cost about 30 dollars, in countries where openly selling pirated discs with any piece of software for 70 cents per disc — just like in Russia ten years ago.
