The company’s internal documents show IBM that medical experts working with Watson, had found “numerous examples of unsafe and incorrect recommendations for treatment” using the software, according to Stat News. From the documents it became clear that the product gives “often inaccurate” speculation that causes “serious questions about the process of creating content and the technology it is based”.
One of the examples in the documents was a case of a 65-year-old man who was diagnosed with lung cancer and who found a strong bleeding. Watson proposed to appoint a man and a chemotherapy drug “Bevacizumab”. But this drug can lead to a “powerful or deadly bleeding”, it means that we cannot prescribe to people with heavy bleeding. However, this recommendation did not give the patient so she could be part of the test system.
The documents accuse the training provided by IBM engineers and doctors from MSK, who have entered into a partnership with IBM in 2012 to teach Watson to “think” like a doctor. From documents follows, that is to feed the AI data of real patients, doctors fed him a hypothetical data of patients or data of artificial cases.
Results the doctors did not like.
“This product is a load of crap,” said IBM doctors Jupiter Hospital in Florida. “We bought it [under the influence of marketing] and with the hope that you will be able to succeed. We can’t use it in most cases.”
And this is just one of the complaints of doctors who have included in the documents.
It is unclear what will IBM Watson’s next, because the doctors can’t divulge the secret information about IBM, not about working with AI, nor the patients, but many of them do not work with a miracle computer.
