Moscow will allow Yandex to release self-driving cars to the streets

The company Yandex and the government of Moscow signed an agreement on cooperation in the development and implementation of unmanned vehicles in the capital. This was announced within the framework of the Moscow urban forum (Moscow Urban Forum 2018).

The project also involves Scientific research automobile and engine Institute NAMI, GAZ group and KAMAZ. The agreement was signed for 5 years with possibility of extension.

Companies are going to develop and introduce in Moscow, drone technology management for all city passenger transport, the development of technologies of transport telematics and intelligent vehicle systems and services based on them, development and testing solutions related to cyber security in the operation of unmanned vehicles, formation of the necessary normative legal and technical base and so on.

It is planned that unmanned vehicles will be developed using mainly Russian technology. The basis for the introduction of unmanned vehicles in Moscow will be intelligent transportation system (its). Lights, camera, detectors, trackers on public transport, all of which can use the technology of “Internet of things” and to communicate with intelligent vehicle systems. This will allow the transport without the driver’s help to navigate in urban space.

Currently its in online mode, controls the operation of more than 10 tyyach units of surface transport and also monitors the movement of more than 118 thousand taxi, more than 7,5 thousand cars, car-share and all cars in Moscow are equipped with GLONASS. All the data is available in the control center of TMS, in which every day receives more than 350 million data packets.

Yandex for the first time showed its own self-driving taxis in spring 2017. The first tests were conducted in a closed area of Moscow, near the main office of Yandex. They showed that the prototypes successfully cope with the task. These prototypes are created on the basis of the Toyota Prius in collaboration with the Institute US. In February 2018 were shown a prototype of an unmanned vehicle, which travelled to Moscow in winter conditions. In June, the drone made its first big trip — he drove from Moscow to Kazan.
