From Alzheimer’s disease will protect… regular aspirin

Alzheimer’s today is one of those diseases, the progression of which is extremely difficult to prevent. However, according to our Western colleagues from the Journal of Neuroscience, a group of researchers from the USA were able to slow the process of disease development due to acetylsalicylic acid. Or, if easier, aspirin.

According to research, aspirin enhances the cells activity of lysosomes are organelles in cells that contain a number of enzymes, including enzymes to break down plaques of beta-amyloid, the protein that is the main reason of development of Alzheimer’s disease. To study the effects of aspirin, the researchers used a genetic line of mice, 5XFAD. They are prone to rapid formation of amyloid-beta peptide and, consequently, the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Rodents received aspirin in low doses for 30 days. It turned out that aspirin enhances the activity of the receptor PPARα. It is involved in processes of cell differentiation and regulation of metabolism in the body. In particular, PPARα influences the level of protein TFEB, which promotes the formation of new lysosomes. And they, in turn, has “purged” from the fabrics of hazardous substances, including proteins, which include beta-amyloid. Moreover, the researchers examined not only how cells respond to receipt of aspirin in the blood, but also on how they respond to a direct introduction of the drug. In both cases, the concentration of amyloid is decreased, and the number of lysosomes increased.

During their research experts found out that aspirin has no additional side-effects, except those that are currently known, and also suggested that a similar effect against Alzheimer’s disease may have a and other drugs similar to aspirin mechanism of action.
