The European Union plans to fine Google $11 billion for “blackmail” smartphone manufacturers

The European Commission is preparing to fine Google for abuses in the promotion of the Android operating system in the market. This became known as the result of the investigation, which was conducted by the European Commissioner for competition, Margrethe Vestager (Margrethe Vestager).

Claims of the European Union affect policy between Google and smartphone manufacturers. According to the commissioners, Google has offered financial incentives to manufacturers if they agreed to set the maximum number of corporate proposals the search giant and, in contrast, threatened to block access to Google Play, if the manufacturer refused to preinstall the Chrome browser or Google search in the original version of the firmware.

In addition, Google has to ensure that manufacturers of smartphones Google services has not released model with a modified Android without Google Play, but with an alternative app store pre-installed, or analogs, Chrome, Youtube etc. To do this, manufacturers were forced to sign an agreement on the fight against Android fragmentation.

Recall that in 2015 similar claims against Google, advanced by the company Yandex. The results of the investigation of the Federal Antimonopoly service of Russia has fined Google to 438 million rubles.

Today the share of smartphones running Android is more than 85%, while Google search accounted for approximately 90% of search queries worldwide.
