One of the most important organs of our immune system is the bone marrow, and biodiversity loss owing to various reasons inevitably leads to the death of a person. However, a team of scientists from Basel University (Switzerland) introduced the artificial bone marrow tissue, which, like its biological prototype, to create stem cells-the precursors of the immune system.
About the new invention writes the editorial Board of The New Atlas. Our foreign colleagues report that for their work, the artificial bone marrow uses of mesenchymal cells which are precursors of red blood cells. These cells in the course of a series of reactions are combined with three-dimensional porous ceramic structure. The resulting conglomerates are placed in a perfusion bioreactor to the biological basis of “grow together” with faux frame.
After combining the resulting fabric for almost three weeks worked exactly as bone marrow, producing hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells. Moreover, the resulting material is very similar in molecular structure to the real marrow. As stated by the study’s author, Ivan Martin,
“With the new material, we are now able to take cells of the patients and to create models of blood diseases, such as leukemia. And we can do it in an environment that consists exclusively of human cells, and includes the conditions, adapted to the specific patient. Moreover, we will be able to learn how diseases affect the differentiation of blood cells and figure out how to restore the diseased organ of the immune system”.
