Russian scientists first in the world unfroze and launched heart

The main problem of modern cryonics (the science of freezing living tissue) is the difficulty in unfreezing these tissues so that ice crystals don’t hurt a living material. Therefore, worldwide research is being conducted on creating a safe technology “defrost”. And the first in the world that managed to make national experts from the Foundation for advanced studies (FPI), headed by Professor Anatoliy Kovtun.

During a series of experiments, a frog heart was frozen at minus 196 degrees Celsius, and after 45 days it successfully unfroze and achieved the restoration of the activity of the authority. Such success can become a real breakthrough in transplantation, because through long-term cryopreservation of tissues and organs it can be stored much longer than now. Moreover, some organs can be stored in special storage and thaw as needed, without forcing the patient to risk their lives waiting for a donor organ. As stated by Professor Kovtun in an interview with RIA “Novosti”,

“To date, developed and experimentally proved at the cellular, tissue and organ models the concept of vitrification of biological objects, providing freezing without crystallization in conditions of reduced 20-30 percent of the total concentration of the cryoprotectants. For example, on the model of the aorta of the rat proved the recovery of endothelial and smooth muscle layers of the vessel at the level of 85-95 percent of live cells after freezing to cryogenic temperatures”.
