How does it work? | Rail cable car

Last week we told you about how to operate a gondola, but today we will focus on another type of cable Railways — rail. Vehicles that carry passengers on them or the goods are called funiculars. First use of the funicular as passenger transport was proposed in 1825, and after almost 30 years the idea has been realized at the same time in the Italian city of Genoa and the Austrian Semmering. In the world today, there are about 400 rail cable cars. Most of them are located in the USA and Switzerland. How does a rail cable car — about it in today’s issue!

There are two main types of lifts: odnowiony and two-car consists. The first of them is quite simple: the engine located at the top of the cable car alternately raises and lowers the car by using rope. On some roads the movement is controlled by the operator using mechanical grip. Capture compresses the rope which is moving in a special recess under the surface. In order to stop the car, the operator simply release the grip. Rope while relentlessly continues.

The most common type of non-motorized funicular with two cars. They are rigidly connected by a rope thrown over the pulley. The pulley and the engine torque it, also located on the top station of the funicular. The motor drives stacked between the support rails rope, whose ends are fixed and the cars. Thus, they always move and stop at the same time and depart exactly in the middle line. This scheme is most economical: the energy spent in the ascent and descent of cars and actually move the difference in weight of two differently loaded passenger cars, and also to overcome the friction force and braking. It should be noted that the movement of the rope, moving cars, and reverse. It changes the direction whenever the carriage or the carriages reach the end of the line.

If two-car cableway is only one pair of rails, the middle of the route is two-track station to the oncoming cars could go. The cars on such roads have different wheels on opposite sides. On wheels left side there is a rim with a double crest, and the right side — smooth rim. When approaching the passing point of the wheel with a double crest cause the car to always go to the left track.

If the cable car breaks the rope or its tension is weakened, then automatically fires the spring, compressing the rail the wedges on both sides. This is in case of an accident to prevent uncontrollable sliding of the carriage with mount.

The route of the cable cars usually are very short — typically a few hundred metres with a steep slope, reaching 35 degrees. The slope of the cable car is usually constant but sometimes varies slightly in different areas. Funicular carriages are designed individually for each route, given its steepness. While the furnicular never form a network, not branch or intersect.
