In the life of every self-respecting portable audiophile there comes a time when he decides to get a decent full-sized headphones and a stationary source. Most often, the latter supports DAC with amplifier, and this is the “harvester” we’ll talk today, because the Audinst has released a second version of their HUD-DX1.
Actually, if you’ve already read my review of the first version of this device, you can skip to the section on sound, I will briefly describe the small difference that there is between these devices. If you missed it, read this immediately, it is still the first version is no longer in official sales.
The Korean company Audinst is not the beginners of the market for personal audio, but despite this, its range they expand very sparingly, concentrating on just a few (very good) products. Released a few years ago DX1 marked the transition of the company from the PCM to the Sabre, although the device itself is still the same versatile and convenient, in a compact housing combines a powerful headphone amplifier and a very advanced small processor solutions: heat stabilized specifying generators, dual power supply (USB or external power), surge protection, load protection, and more.
Recently, the company decided to upgrade to this device, replacing some MUSES8920 op amps LME49720 on (however, the Muses are still used in the role of the Converter current/voltage), as well as using capacitors from Nichicon. Even earlier the company reduced the price tag, and it is about $ 330 with upgraded internals, he has not changed, that can not but rejoice.

Packing and delivery
Judging by the fact that the box remained the same as in the first version (update notifies only the sticker), packaging Audinst booked in advance with the stock. Inside the box everything is neatly packaged in bags and padded inserts, so for the safety of the instrument can be nearly relaxed (after all, don’t underestimate the talents of our mail). Of course, inside is itself a DAC/amp, in addition to it, there are also:
- power supply
- adapter for European outlets
- USB wire
- hex screwdriver for opening the case
- 4 self-adhesive feet
As you can see, unlike other manufacturers, sealing their devices, Audinst is not only prohibited to open the DX1, but even give themselves for this tool, but still is more useful Phillips screwdriver. What you may need to get in — will discuss below.
Design and management
In Korea, apparently decided that the approach of Henry Ford, “you can order our car in any color, if this color — black” is too harsh, so DX1 is available in two versions: black and Golden and white-silver. Both look very good, and, perhaps, watching them both live, I will not undertake to say which is better.
The device itself is very compact, it does not take up much space on the table, at desire it is possible even to take with you on trips, if you do not think a single day without high-quality sound. As for the design, I think it is clear from the photos, I’ll just tell you about the management.
On the back panel are placed almost all the inputs:
- USB connection to computer or mobile phones (in the latter case it will be necessary to connect the power supply)
- if you decide to connect the DX1 to the network
- line out two RCA
- optical input and output
As you can see, the interface is decent for a complete set lacking only a line input, because the Audinst DX1 positioned more as a DAC than an amplifier. Some compensation may be able to use the device in the role of the Converter “USB — optics”.
As I wrote above, DX1 often can be powered by 5 volts, received on the USB bus, although in some cases it would be more logical to connect the power supply. Offhand, I see the following cases when it is necessary to do when using a smartphone as the source, if you are using the DX1 with a laptop and want to save its battery, if the USB output of your computer much noise interference on the power line, using a tight full-size headphones. In the latter case, you will need also to include the maximum gain, by removing the two jumpers on the internal Board. When you turn on the power supply automatically switches DX1 to work with it using USB only for data transfer. If the source is turned off, the processor also enters sleep mode with reduced power consumption.
The front panel has two headphone outputs: 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm, if you want you can use them both at the same time, but most often it is just an extra convenience, eliminates the need of adapters. Here is the switch output (linear/naushnikov) and switch inputs (optical/USB) in the middle position disables the DAC. The volume knob is to the right, she has a very quiet swing, the noise when rotating is missing.
Sound
To listen to the device used the following headphones: iBasso IT03, 99 Meze Classics, Audio Zenith PMx2, Noble Kaiser Encore, Campfire Audio Andromeda, 64 Audio U12, HUM Pristine and others.
The feed processor remains neutral, with good resolution and without any “artificial additives”. If we add to this a large reserve of power it would be a handy device for any headphone that enables them to maximize their own character.
Bass is fast, very sharp, with wonderful levels of detail and good depth. DX1 devoid of the typical “additive” bass, typical of many other sources, particularly cheap, so at first it may seem that the bass has little, but in fact quantitatively bass here is quite balanced. Of course, the bass has nice texture and well controlled.
Midrange is very detailed and is served with a small bias in microcontrast, which leads to some of perebarschivat device, recording need better quality. Thanks to this amazing feed device conveys the nuances of the instruments and the nature of the premises, but the low male voice on the bad records, you may miss the weight, although women from those midrange usually win. The imaginary scene is not a record, but much more average in width and depth, with excellent separation plans.
Treble range this is as good as expected, it is long, detailed, with a slightly accented attack and short fades. Thus DX1 avoids the sharpness and the over-emphasis on the treble range, unless you use it with really bright headphones. However, RF-sensitive people can still feel “too much”, although to my ears the number of “top” here is normal. “Layering” RF is not perfect, but for this price range is also quite good in the upper frequencies, the harvester is able to make the most of the headphones with virtually any flow.
If to compare with the first version, the difference is not great, just at the level of small nuances. The second generation has a slightly better resolution of bass and WSC, while the “upper mid” first generation is served a little smoother. In General, if you are the owner of a DAC of the first generation, no need for an urgent upgrade there.
If you want to change something in the flow device, offers rich possibilities of replacement of Oh in DX1 changing two “operatsionniy”, V2 their roles are LME’shki, but if you want you can change them on many others. In order not to waste time (and money) on a quest I must say that, according to numerous reviews and my personal experience, best results give older models OU from OU Muses and hybrid SupremeSound V5i.
Compatibility
DX1 is very versatile, there are just a few of the headphone models that is not enough power. The opposite is true — low noise level allows almost no problems to use it with sensitive IEM. The only difficulty in this case could be excess capacity and, as a consequence, small amount comfortable of the turn of the volume control, if your IEM is very sensitive. The latter, however, without problems is corrected by the volume reduction at the source or using attenuator.
Stylistically combine universal, the main thing — the preference of the owner and worthy material. The quality of the recordings the device is still very critical, somewhere in the 8 to 10-point scale.
Traditionally, several tracks of examples
Caetano Veloso — Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile. At first glance it seems that this track is quite simple, but it’s really a false impression, only with a good DAC (like DX1) can break it down by component, catching all the nuances of the choir, and enjoy the beautiful, voluminous record.
Lithium — Green. Another multi-faceted track with a very voluminous record, catching some extravagance, hidden behind a calm facade. Add to DX1 detailed good headphones and you can listen to this song dozens of times, all the time whilst finding something new.
Röyksopp — Eple. If the previous example put you to sleep, then this will surely Wake up, pass sandpaper on the ears. Broken rhythms, overlapping each other, form perfect in its randomness work, and the combine of the Audinst with its neutral detail will allow you not to miss any fancy bending this track.
Summary
In General, the DX1 has undergone very little change, the developers apparently decided that no good deed goes unpunished, and to change the familiar sound of steel, just a little tuningova it on your own. So this processor is still one of the best ways to get for little money a quality hospital: the detailed, technical, versatile and powerful. For those who this sound will eventually become boring, and there is a great opportunity to “refresh” the feed by replacing just a couple of OU.
