Head of the laboratory of AI research Apple has told about work on autopilot

That Apple is working on its own version of the pilot, all spoke quite a long time, but the Corporation itself politely remained silent, not revealing any details about the project. Apparently, is was just about to tell you. Now Ruslan Salakhutdinov, head of the research Department of AI Apple made a report, which described the principles of operation of the autopilot of the future and spoke about the work done. Many of his words already familiar to the projects of other companies, but there were some really interesting innovations.

For example, Apple has created a unique system of object recognition which copes with the task, even in difficult situations. Even if the camera lens is covered with raindrops, which makes it difficult for the program review and object recognition the system still clearly calculates the distance to objects, and accurately determines the location of the pedestrian. Including if the person crosses the road, half hidden from the cameras by another car.

Interesting and positioning system of the car. It works by localizing the position of the machine on the ground, while simultaneously creating a detailed three-dimensional map of the environment using sensors of the vehicle. This approach allows the autopilot system to make clear decisions in difficult situations, when you need to act quickly if, for example, on the way popped up the unwary pedestrian.

At the moment the main purpose of the Apple is the production of self-driving shuttles for their own staff — they will help employees and guests quickly move around the huge Apple campus and its surroundings. Own cars while Apple has to produce not going to, so it is unclear whether the shuttles the only option of applying either the autopilot will apply to other developments of the future.
