When I first heard that Bethesda is planning to make his hit 2011 in virtual reality — and immediately cringed. Whether the joke — to adapt such a huge fantasy world under the still young platform PlayStation VR without loss in quality. Most of all I was tensed after tested the disgusting raw demo of a future game at the exhibition “IgroMir 2017”. And here The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR finally went on sale. I hasten to reassure you: in the end it was not as bad as I imagined. On the contrary – very nice!

Yes, Yes, I understand how it looks from the outside. Bethesda has many times re-released Skyrim in that today is not played unless the people living on a desert island away from civilization. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released on almost all consoles the last two generations, has been reprinted in an updated and expanded edition, and not long ago even came out for a hybrid Nintendo console Switch, allowing for the first time became portable. The porting of the famous role-playing games in virtual reality decided to start with the PlayStation VR. Version for HTC Vive, and perhaps for other manufacturers is planned for 2018. Porting games to VR was performed by Escalation Studios Studio.
No matter how many times you passed before Skyrim. So you’ve never seen or felt. It is impossible to convey my experience through a review. Any words not enough to describe it all. But as soon as you put on the head of the PlayStation VR headset will be inside the game – will immediately understand what I meant. The degree of immersion in a virtual Tamriel is just incredible! And that’s even with all the imperfections of the current level of VR technology. Let’s be honest: PlayStation VR is the weak solution of the “great Trinity”, which includes also the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. But Sony compensates for this low cost headset and great library of VR games. Admittedly, it turns out the Japanese just fine. Sale PlayStation VR is steadily increasing, and hundreds of studios from different countries are working on new games for it.
Briefly recall the plot of the game. You never know, suddenly still exists among our readers an amazing person who is not familiar with this RPG. Events in Skyrim occur 200 years after the final TES IV: Oblivion. The main hero of the game is nameless protagonist (the player who creates it in the character editor), which, together with a few rebels from the rebel Brothers of the Storm driven to death in the fortress of Helgen. So the protagonist and would have lost a head, not attacking the fortress of the big dragon. Hero avoids execution and inadvertantly discovers his mysterious power to get special abilities by absorbing the souls of dragons he killed. So begins his crusade in an attempt to defeat the legendary dragon named Alduin, thereby protecting the world from destruction.
In the course of you free to do the story quests, developing the main story or distracted by performing unnecessary tasks and free exploration of a huge world of Skyrim. You can become a thief and to hone their skills virtuoso emptying other people’s pockets, it is possible to join the blood cult, and to understand dark magic and you can just explore ancient caves and mysterious caves in search of valuable loot and powerful weapons. The world of Skyrim is just huge, and his research you can take hundreds of hours. At first I thought that for the sake of virtual reality the game is heavily cut, but it turned out that it is 100% the same Skyrim that we all know well. And also includes three official DLC: Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn. And that, you know, additional dozens of hours of gameplay.
The world map has undergone a major overhaul and is now fully three-dimensional, first-person looks incredibly impressive. However, much changed the whole game interface. For example, a compass indicating the correct direction and current location of the quest is now somewhere down on the level of your belly in the form of a kind belt. To navigate in space, you only need to slightly lower my eyes down, and everything will fall into place. Menu skills also became fully three-dimensional: it seems like you are among a starry sky with many constellations, each of which is responsible for a particular skill. Although what I explained to you? You and without me perfectly know how the leveling system in Skyrim.
The game can be played either with the traditional DualShock 4 controller, with two controllers, PlayStation Move. Each of the two control methods has its pros and cons. Of course, the two Move in your hands greatly enhance the effect of immersion in the game: you can freely swing the sword, hide behind the shield, incinerating the enemy with spells, shoot arrows. But in this case about comfortable moving to locations, you can forget once and for all. The movement in this case is realized in two ways at your choice. The first is teleportation, when you point the controller at the place near your current position, then press the right button, then your character moves to that point. The second method is more interesting: you move, hold down the button and guiding your movement by rejecting the Move controller in the right direction. With the help of tiny buttons “X” and “O” at this time can be rotated around its axis. To this method will have to get used for several hours, but it is significantly more interesting than “teleport”. In any case, a convenient and intuitive it is not. The controllers Move significantly lacks analog sticks to move. On location of Sony I would have already released a new revision of the controller with additional controls.
DualShock 4 controller allows you to navigate using a traditional analog stick, but most likely about swinging a sword or archery not even dream of. But to aim in archery by simply turning the head in the direction of the enemy, is very convenient. All the actions are the usual buttons of the controller, as in the original version of the game. And though this greatly weakens the effect of immersion in the atmosphere of the legendary fantasy world, this method of control will certainly appeal to people who don’t want to spend hours of my life to get used to the controller PlayStation Move.
In the beginning of the review I mentioned a very bad Skyrim VR demo that we were offered to try out at the exhibition “IgroMir 2017”. The demonstration was full of bugs, some wild flaws, and I even successfully managed her tightly to “hang” at the end on the main boss. And manage we were allowed only using two Move controllers with movement through teleportation. No wonder that the impression of many journalists from so terrible a “demo” and inconvenient administration was, to put it mildly, disgusting. What can I say, I myself a week of spitting what he saw and experienced that day. Fortunately, in the end everything turned out not so bad. Will charge failed the demonstration on an early build of the game and not the most ideal control scheme selected by the organizers.
Visually, Skyrim VR, as you may have guessed, is far from ideal. The picture is significantly more soap than in the recently re-released Special Edition versions of the game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Textures are not very high resolution and anti-aliasing is not always able to cope with ladders, but all this does not prevent to receive pleasure from an incredibly deep dive into the atmosphere of epic fantasy. Despite the fact that the game throws us many years ago, in the previous generation of consoles, the world of Skyrim still looks just fine. Snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys, shimmering in the rays of the sun the surface of rivers and lakes, mysterious caves, towering fortress – all this makes you a genuine delight. And about the technical imperfection of forgetting just a few minutes later. As one of those times when total immersion in the game does the rest. But again, all this must be seen and felt by oneself, as in any other way I can’t explain it.
It’s worth to mention such a phenomenon is inextricably linked to virtual reality, as “motion sickness”. In the Russian language it is called “sea sickness” or “kinetosome”. This effect occurs during the VR gaming because your eyes see your virtual body and its movements through the virtual world, but now something body at this very moment is sitting and not moving anywhere. Because of this dissonance, the brain, which unquestioningly believes that he is shown the eye, it begins to seem that your system is poisoned. The stomach is fed a pulse to retching to rid the body of possible toxins. In other words, this side effect – not that other, as a normal protective reaction of the organism from poisons that can harm our health.
In the game Skyrim VR developers are very serious about the problem of sickness. In the game options you can set a special filter, which during the movement and turns around the axis will display the edges of the screen semi-transparent black vignette, reducing the negative effects of VR. Personally, my long hours of game play never got seasick and did not feel sick. And I haven’t even messed with this in a slim VR setup, where all can be sharpened individually for themselves. The owners of the weak vestibular apparatus I would recommend to use the travel system with the help of teleportation. With it the effect of motion sickness is definitely going to be minimal, as the movement you simply do not feel.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR today, without a doubt, the longest game for VR headsets. After the full exploration of the snowy world it may take you more than 200 hours of time. Imagine just imagine: 200 hours headset virtual reality! Plus three DLC for a total duration of 20-40 hours. In General, if you have a PlayStation VR headset, and the soul requires adventure of epic scope – Skyrim VR will be the best choice. Sony, by the way, hurry up and released the VR bundle PlayStation complete with game, camera and two Move controllers. Of course, from a technical point of view the game is outdated, and the picture on the displays headset virtual reality leaves much to be desired. However, for the first time you can really get INSIDE their favorite games and not watch her from the outside through a rectangular TV screen or monitor. And this, I tell you, well worth it. Virtual reality completely changes the look of Skyrim. I put the game score of 8 out of 10.
