Periodic diagnostics and preventive examinations help to reveal a lot of disease at an early stage, but some conditions can be diagnosed only when the disease is already quite long. In addition, a life-threatening pathology can’t be detected in remote regions due to the lack of qualified professionals. But recently the staff of the Medical University of Vienna presented the available retinal scanner, which can be a good tool for early diagnosis of several diseases, including diabetes.
According to the publication Science Daily, for its development, the researchers used data that can be “considered” from the retina of any person, and the information it can give a lot. In developing the scanner technology was used optical coherence tomography (OCT), which for 1.2 seconds produces up to 40,000 images. The obtained data are analyzed by algorithms based on artificial intelligence, and after the system generates a report.
As we found out, this method of diagnosis without the help of an ophthalmologist provides an opportunity to identify the presence in a patient of diabetes or to calculate the risk of its occurrence, in addition, it is possible to obtain data on biological age, aptitudes and experience of Smoking and the number of parameters. In the near future, scientists want to improve the algorithm for diagnosis of age-related degenerative disorders, neurological problems, kidney disease, heart and blood vessels, liver, and pathology of other internal organs.
Diseases will be identified, just by scanning the retina
