Apparently, the FiiO still engineering Department wins marketing, another explanation for the emergence of second-generation Q1 I do not see. The capabilities and specifications of this portable DAC obviously does not fit into its niche, offering a much larger, but let’s take first things first.
If you still remember the first Q1, presented in the second half of 2015, it was such a fun portable gadget that resembled the shape of a flask. He was quite good for its price (100 dollars), but was not different something amazing. The second his generation, presented at the summer presentations are of a level that other producers usually consider flagship: balanced output from 220 mW to 32Ω loads, support for all resolutions up to 384 kHz/32 bit and DSD256, work with iOS devices without an adapter, the stylish compact body… this List can name more, but the price remained at the same level (yeah, $ 100), so svezheanonsirovannaya the flagship of the Q5 must be something really surprising.

Packing and delivery
It seems that the designers FiiO can’t come to a single style in the design of the box new Q1 is packaged in a box of fairly thin cardboard white, but printing and all associated traditionally done well. There is a sticker with a scratch off strip hiding the verification code to originality.

In General, the delivery normal, without much luxury, though the presence of Lightning-wires included — a nice bonus for users of Apple technology. Other wires are not included, but a suitable cable for Android devices-easy to find, and for users players Sony recently released the original cable from FiiO, and it will have to be bought separately. Although I doubt that a lot of people need, but perhaps the Sony A35 in the role of transport would look bad.
Design and management
The design is also properly worked, adding not only the “ultimate”, but also ease of use. For starters, Q1 Mark II is smaller than it seems in the photos, particularly pleased with the reduced thickness, after all the main applications of this gadget in conjunction with a smartphone. The design is made without unnecessary frills, but the Golden ring around the connectors in the spirit of the old Grundig and “brand” the design of the volume control give a thoughtful approach to development. For management everything is quite usual. On the front side hosts the volume control combined with power switch. On the rear panel is MicroUSB-input for charging and connecting to the source, and two switch — Gain and bass boost (the latter, incidentally, is implemented quite neatly and quite unfit for use). New Q1 should decide whether it is connected to a computer or smartphone, and in the latter case does not charge your battery by discharging the phone. With iOS it works perfectly, but with Android phones I have read complaints that sometimes still involves Q1 charging mode.
Despite its compact size, Q1 are hardy enough, in my standard test (MEEAudio P1 in the role of a load, gain low, volume at a comfortable level, playing FLAC 44.1/16 via USB) the device worked for 10 hours and 15 minutes full charging require 3 hours and 50 minutes.
In other reviews I’ve read of complaints that the Q1 Mark II is prone to interference when used with a smartphone. I specifically tested it in a “sandwich” with the iPhone 6 Plus, listening over Wi-Fi and LTE music from Deezer, no noise except for the quiet background of the amplifier Q1 was not. Perhaps it depends on specific smartphones, router or any other circumstances, but noticeable loud leads to hear I could not.
Sound

Bass slightly accented in the area of midbass that gives the sound a nice effect of massiveness. The resolution of bass is normal, although not prohibitive, severely biting bass here will not name, but impressively relaxed him even further. NCH have sufficient mass in order to sound natural, texture is also transmitted at a decent level. Deep bass are present, but do not appear ahead so as not to drown out the rest of the range. Overall, decent for its price NCH, moderately accented, but with a normal resolution, this transfer of bass is quite typical for modern budget sources and initial-middle segments. For lovers of extra massiveness, a bass booster, gently “lift” the lower half of the frequency range.
MIDs are probably the strongest side of this unit, they are detailed, very musical and pleasing emotion. Of course, to the resolution and study of the players of the middle segment Q1 new revision far away, but the player entry-level it bypasses, both on the technical component and the “involvement” of the listener into the music. DAC wins back the material with a good level of detail without the harshness, and manages not to stick out the flaws in the recording. Imaginary scene a little more than average in width and slightly less depth, but the separation in both directions is good enough.
As for HF, that, on the one hand, they are quite interesting painted: the lower treble is a little allocated, and the rest of the range, on the contrary, mitigated, it gives a nice detail without fatigue. On the other hand, to call this natural flow does not, however, want the natural RF from the device in the budget price range — is clearly illogical. So this attempt to make the sound more interesting than it really is, it is possible to count more in the DAC asset than a liability.
Comparison, I will not spend, as the other comparable portable DACs I have, and comparing with players I don’t see the point, as all will boil down to “better FiiO X1-2, somewhere on the level Cayin N3, slightly worse than the FiiO X3-3, however, here we must make allowances for tastes”.
Compatibility
Almost everything that is related to source selection digital signal for Q1 second revision, I have already written above. As for the headphones, with balanced output this baby has a good reserve of power for almost any headphone from among those that it makes sense to use portable.
