Rare case: patient in Italy sweating blood

Excessive sweating can lead to unpleasant sensations and stains on clothing, but at least you are sweating then. But the Italian patient is sweating blood. 21-year-old patient presented for medical examination after three years of bleeding from her hands and face. There’s no cuts, nothing else that could cause this bleeding. She was so bad that it was closed and suffered from the deepest depression and panic.

After observing the patient and treatment of depression and anxiety, the Florentine doctors diagnosed her with “hematohidrosis” rare disorder “bloody sweat.” Even today, nobody knows what causes it, and some are skeptical of its existence. Analysis of the patient’s skin did not reveal anything unusual, as the researchers reported in the journal Canadian Medical Association Journal.

According to the CMAJ review, the diagnoses of the bloody sweat of a long story. Mention of the bloody sweat was by Aristotle in the third century BC, and throughout the middle ages. The disorder has a clear religious connotation, given its Association with religious relic, the Sudarium of Veronica, which, according to legend, appeared the face of Christ. In 2012, in textbook of dermatology wrote that the disorder “has not been scientifically confirmed,” although the authors do not deny its existence.

Michelle Sholzberg, a hematologist at the hospital of St. Michael in Toronto, told CBC that the case was “most unusual”.

Author of a commentary in CMAJ, the medical historian Jacalyn Duffin from Queen’s University in Ontario, studied 42 medical articles on the subject of this disorder in 1880. She noticed that almost half of these articles occurred in the last five years, but many still doubt the existence of this disorder. “Ironically, in our seemingly secular world hematohidrosis old Association with religious mystery complicates acceptance of his existence,” she writes.

In the end, Italian researchers decided to treat the patient’s beta-blocker propranolol how to treat patients in the past. It worked, but did not stop the bleeding completely.
