How to increase hard disk capacity up to 40 TB? Using microwaves!

With the increasing amount of information increases and the need for data storage. The volume of media is growing more slowly than we would like. To increase memory for many users is not enough of standard means, and they transfer some of the data “in the cloud”. But recently, a well-known company Western Digital announced the creation of a technology that will fit on a usual hard disk of up to 40 terabytes of data.

The experts at Western Digital reported that they were able to solve the problem with the main “bottleneck” hard drives – recording head. The opportunity to make it less gives you the chance to increase the data density on the storage elements. The design uses spin-resonator and the microwave emitter. The latter can create on the surface of the disk plates high-energy region, which will allow you to record data on a disc with a weak magnetic field. The technology is called MAMR (microwave-assisted magnetic recording) and according to the available information, allows to obtain a recording density equal to 4 terabits per square inch. The best part is that it does not need to create a new production line, and the disk size will be equal to the usual 3.5 inches. To establish the production will be in 2019.

“In order to ensure the necessary growth of data warehouses, we need the combination of old, new and future technologies. The best mix of today is the technology SSD Intel 3D Xpoint, combined with slower and more cost-effective technology MAMR, which will provide storage of basic information. And together, these two technologies can give the best result.”
