The U.S. military continues to work on several projects relating to laser weapons. A promising technology is not without significant flaws, but tests of new development in the US army carried out regularly. Recently in new Mexico at the landfill White Sands, the us military tried to figure out how laser weapons can be effective in combating unmanned aerial vehicles.
At the site tested the laser system ATHENA (Advanced Test High Energy Asset) at 30 kilowatts. It is equipped with a special guidance system on the target. During the tests it was able to knock five unmanned aircraft in flight. New laser fiber has proven its effectiveness in the field, achieving a loss of orientation and damage drones.
Representatives of Lockheed Martin, to Finance the development, said that tests were conducted according to their calculations and expectations. Earlier the installation was tested on a stationary target — then she, too, showed good results.
Portable installation ATHENA — experimental design, established for testing and demonstrating the latest developments of laser weapons, which nourishes a new compact alternator from Rolls-Royce.
