What if you suddenly need to make an important call, but the connection on the phone was gone? In the modern city is easily fixable, but what to do if you are in a remote village? Or even in the mountains? Of course, for such cases, there are satellite phones, but they are still bulky and costly to use. Fortunately, there is a solution. Not so long ago, Sonnet Labs from Toronto presented a set of devices that gives the ability to use cellular network, even if such nearby is not observed.
The new device is a digital radio operating in one of the ranges of the far radio. In this case, for connection with the radio a smartphone don’t even need Wi-Fi (although this is available), just connect the phone cable to the station, and your smartphone will regain the ability to make calls, and send text messages, pictures, videos and even GPS coordinates. On the “other end” is another mobile phone connected to another base station. Thus for the security of information not to worry — the data is encrypted using the AES algorithm.
The Sonnet system can be activated automatically when no signal from the cellular network. In addition, Sonnet can be used as a point to back when in places of natural disasters and other emergencies. The instrument can also operate in repeater mode, transferring data through the chain from one base to another, until they get a phone with access to the network.
The range of a single transmitter is approximately 5 kilometers in open area, 10 kilometers on a hill and about 2 miles in the city. Built-in battery lasts for 24 hours of continuous operation of the device.
