China has created artificial electronic “skin” that changes the color

As the press service of Tsinghua University, which is located in Beijing, scientists and researchers from this institution managed to develop a new material based on graphene with unique physical properties: electronic artificial “skin” that can change its color.

E-the skin is called e-skin (similar to e-ink e-ink). It is worth saying that attempts to create changing the color of things used before, but they were based on other technologies: LEDs, liquid crystals, or not using mechanical parts. Graphene for these purposes was taken as the basis for the first time. The choice of the scientists accidentally fell on this material, as it is extremely resistant to bending and a powerful mechanical stress. As noted by the author of the study, Tingting young,

“Graphene not only has high transparency, good flexibility and high specific capacity, but also has great potential for the production of flexible electronic components. In addition, we found that our material can change color upon deformation. Even a small voltage was enough to cause obvious color change. That is, the more the material is stretched, the more it changes color.”

According to the developers, during the survey they were inspired by nature: the behavior of chameleons and several species of octopus that can change color depending on the surrounding animal environment. More detail to reveal the details of the technology, and showcase the first samples of products based on e-skin, the creators promise in the near future, but now they claim that the new material can be used for clothing manufacturing, robotics, in the manufacture of electronic devices, prosthetics and other medical purposes.
