Russian scientists have created a material for “healing” road

The problem of bad roads, contrary to popular belief, applies not only to Russia and the former Soviet Union. Every year around the world on the pavement leaving a lot of money, and the establishment of the road which would “fix itself”, by far not as useless as it might seem at first glance. Very pleased that development in this area is underway in our country. For example, recently, scientists nust MISIS has developed a technology to produce “self-healing asphalt and concrete materials for road surfacing”.

Information on new domestic development was published in the journal Composites Science and Technology. According to the article, a new method of repairing cracks of the roadway will reduce the repair period runs from weeks to several hours, and repair costs can be reduced in 3 times.

The structure of nanotubes for implementation in bitumen-asphalt

In the material included conductive carbon multi-walled nanotubes “Taunit-M”, which have unique parameters that determine their high induction sensitivity. The addition of such impurities in the traditional road surface, not much increases production costs, but allows to achieve the effect of “healing”. Next to start this process you need a device like a hybrid of a microwave oven and an ice skating rink: it will go on the road, warming the surface and causing the nanotube to the movement of the microwaves, which initiates splicing “ran the road”. So, to repair will not need to use a large number of new road mix. You will need only a couple of times to ride, and “wound tight”.

The chemical composition of the nanotubes: 92.4% of carbon, 5.4% of oxygen, 0.7% of magnesium, 1.5%, the cobalt

It should say that a similar development is underway in other countries, such as Holland and China, but foreign scientists as a Supplement, use a metal fiber. The use of carbon nanotubes enhances the efficiency of the method and significantly increases the manufacturability and involves induction heating of only a thin bitumen film covering the stone materials, and does not require changing the composition of the asphalt mix.

Field trials of new technologies are planned for one of the road projects in the framework of preparation for “world Cup 2018”. In addition, approved the use of new technology on the roads of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and some other countries, and their interest to the development was expressed by the representatives of Germany, Austria, China and Hong Kong.
