RIYADH –
The Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has almost 67 million dollars (approximately 60 million euro) will be donated to the cholera epidemic in neighbouring Yemen to combat. The money has been transferred to the UN children’s agency Unicef and the world health organization WHO.
The financial support is, according to the Saudi ministry of Culture and Information referred to the organisations to enable more effective action against the epidemic. In Yemen according to the WHO, probably some 180,000 people are infected with cholera. More than 1200 people in the country have so far died of the disease.
The economy of Yemen has collapsed due to the conflict between Houthi insurgents and an international coalition under the leadership of Saudi Arabia. The crown prince, who is also Defence minister, is seen as one of the driving forces behind the military intervention.
