Something other than the A2 motorway between Utrecht and Amsterdam.
Not so long ago it was you all @Wouter looking for the best rijdersweg of the Netherlands. We are in our little country is not really spoiled for choice with inspirational asfaltlinten, so the choice was quickly made. Of course, we have to move across the border to look at the awesome roads. We all know the area around Adenau, the Stelviopas and route along Costa Di Amalfi. But soon there will be The Godfather Of All Rijderswegen: the Ruta de los Parques.
The Ruta de los Parques started life as ‘Route 7’. This was built by 10,000 soldiers in command of the Chilean dictator Pinochet. This 1200 km long road crosses by the almost uninhabitable region of Patagonia in Southern Chile. This road, which later Carretera Austral was called, runs right through kustregenwouden, glaciers and mountains (Andes). The road is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of Chile of the twentieth century counted.
This road is already opened in the ’80s, but the ‘construction’ of the dirt road was never discontinued. It is the intention of the road to finish to the southern tip of Chile. The road is a total of 2,400 km long(!) and runs through 17 nature parks. Thanks to that, parks will once again be renamed Ruta de los Parques (parkenrroute). The road will for a large part are unpaved.
Last month, the Chilean president (Michelle Bachelet), and the American philanthropist and conservationist Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, committed to the national parks of Chile with over four million hectares of land to expand. Truly bizarre, that is an area that is larger than Switzerland!
Then, of course, only the question of which car is most suitable to this Ruta de los Parques check off? Three answers are possible: Ford Mustang Boss, Lotus Esprit V8 or Porsche 928. The former presentation trio of TopGear reed in the waning days of the program with the achtcilinders in this area. I, the undersigned, for a Toyota 4Runner with all the accessories from the TRD catalog. It must, of course, all very continue to and so a 4Runner is almost everywhere. In addition, I find it a very cool, likeable and unpretentious car.
