Japanese company Sony is famous not only for its game consoles and TVs, but high-quality optical sensors for camcorders, cameras and smartphones. But if the new camera was designed to track moving objects with a frequency of 20 frames per second, the robots that speed may not be enough. Yesterday Sony announced its new high-speed optical sensor IMX382 able to track objects with a frequency of 1000 frames per second. The novelty will be mainly used in robotics.
Sensor, as you know, intended to robots, including industrial, can monitor particularly fast moving objects. For example, without such a sensor can not do in the Assembly-line production. Today, the camera recorded an object on the conveyor and detects a defect, the thread has to suspend. With the new Sony sensor manufacturers will be able to save a lot of time. The sensor is able to monitor up to six sites, to separate the particular object from others, as well as to identify some pattern from the seen image.
In the future, these sensors will be installed not only on the production line, but also on other robots. In the video just above you can see the tiny robot at high speed, pursuing the fleeing from him the ball. Without high-speed optical sensor is so accurate tracking of the object would be impossible. Sony representatives claim that currently existing sensors from other manufacturers with similar image quality can not boast a frame rate above 30 fps. The first batch of sensors IMX382 will be available to customers in early October 2017.
