NASA is holding a contest to 3D print houses on other planets

In the competition of 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge involves teams from various universities, but at the end of one of the stages of the event, the judges noted the two teams. The winners of startup Technology Branch has allocated 85 thousand dollars, and the team of the University of Alaska received the award in the amount of 15 thousand dollars.

The competition takes place in several stages. First, the design stage took place in 2015. Now undergoing the second stage, divided into three phases, the first of which just recently ended. The participants published a variety of geometric shapes using materials of their own design, after which the product was subjected to various tests of strength, toxicity and ease of production.

In the third stage, the organizers plan to attract technology developers, allowing to build houses “on the ground”. The colonists who arrived on other planets, will be more convenient to use local materials for the construction of housing so they will be able to significantly save some space in the cargo holds.

The organizers emphasize that the 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge — a first step towards the construction of habitable buildings, but noted that in the submitted competition projects already seen the great potential that can be realized in the study of other planets.
