Navalny in an appeal re-sentenced

A Russian court has opposition leader Alexei Navalny Wednesday in an appeal re-sentenced to a conditional prison sentence of five years. The case was transferred after criticism from the European Court of Human Rights (ECTHR), reported Russian state-owned media.

The lawyer of Navalny announced on Wednesday to re-appeal to the European mensenrechtenhof. The case may have consequences for the political career of the leader of the opposition, which in 2018 will participate in the presidential elections. According to Russian officials, making his conviction impossible.

A lower court sentenced Navalny earlier this year, to a conditional punishment because of embezzlement. That case was transferred after the ECTHR had ruled that Navalny is no fair trial was had. The new lawsuit eventually led not to a lower penalty.
