How do the market, firmly taken its niche and understand what to expand without limit, it will not work? Right, trying to storm the adjacent segments. In Yulong is perfectly understood and for a start tried on the tooth segment of “top”, the result was controversial. Then the company decided to try the initial segment, and that’s where they did a great job with the new Daart Canary.
According to the website, Daart is a new subsidiary brand of the company created for budget decisions, and “opens” it, of course, the product, which in Yulong, they live in Korea, would have eaten not one dog. Daart Canary — compact desktop DAC and headphone amplifier, which incorporates the high experience of developers.
In Yulong just thought, what are all audiophiles, not burdened with excess money, and went through this list:
- aluminum housing with good design? There
- popular chip DAC with high quality food and piping? There
- support all existing formats including the high-end DSD? There
- all conceivable inputs and outputs, including allowing to use the device as a pure DAC and separate amplifier? There
- powerful headphone amplifier? There
- good price?
There she is, Daart Canary is on sale for only $ 280 (plus or minus) and is one of the best desktop offerings in this category. Separately pleased with the fact that the Russian and Ukrainian distributor of the price almost meet the recommended that eliminates the need of ordering from China.

Packing and delivery
Box is quite simple, decorated in pleasant green and blue colors. From the booklet provided photos of the combine from two sides — simple and restrained. Inside, protected by soft insert is a DAC itself, power adapter (12V 1A) and a good USB wire. On the latter is not provided for the ferrite ring to protect against interference, but is almost certainly the DAC isolated from the USB power, so the filter here won’t matter.
Design and management
The company thought it over and over, taking a step away from the typical and monotonous parallelepipeds. The form of “Canaries” can be seen in the photos, from myself I will add that the harvester is made of aluminum, and metal do not regret it, in combination with rubber feet that provides a secure fit on the table without the risk of accidentally smack the DAC on the floor. A choice of three colors: black, silver and limited edition red, I have, as you know, was is a silver. Quite unusually made and the surface texture of aluminum has a pronounced velvety matte texture that, in my opinion, looks interesting.
All controls located on the front and back sides. Traditionally I’ll start with the reverse.
There is: power socket, toggle switch that disables Canary, USB, optical and coaxial inputs. Near them perched 4 RCA line inputs and outputs. A similar concern is developers very happy, if you wish, you can gradually upgrade by buying a better DAC or amplifier and the device from Daart will serve in the role of an amplifier or DAC to pair to it. However, I think most will still use it as a processor via USB.
Front panel controls a little less. To the right is a standard 6,3 mm headphone socket, center — handle volume control with a nice smooth swing. In the beginning of the scale there is a slight imbalance in the channels, but it quickly passes. Noise at rotation of a regulator is not observed. To the left there is a Golden plate with 5 LEDs and switch inputs. Four indicators show the selected input, the latter lights up when the signal is in DSD. Best of all this gold looks on the black body, but the silver and red don’t look alien. The switch inputs are made in the form of a toggle switch, but it can’t be fixed, but only pressed down and returns to its original position, switching the inputs around the circle.
You can certainly argue about taste, but purely on my Daart Canary was very nice and decently assembled device that looked good and would be in the segment 3 times more expensive. This combine would look lovely beside your PC or laptop, adding “Desk ensemble”. The abundance of inputs and outputs allows you to connect to this device anything. By the way, Yulong promise in the future to release a firmware that adds support for iOS devices.
Sound
To listen following equipment was used.
- Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 as the source
- Fidelia in the role of player
- Headphones: Meze Classics 99, Audio Zenith PMx2, Noble Kaiser Encore, Kennerton Odin, ZMF Atticus and Eikon and others.
- Recording high-resolution Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky have The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)
The first thing that immediately understand, including this Capos is its power. For the rare headphone knob will have to turn more than 9 hours, and many even that will be a lot. Of course, nothing Yulong is not equipped with a harvester switch gain, but, fortunately, in Audirvana it is very well implemented digital volume control, so subtract sound at least 10-15 dB to get a comfortable range of adjustment.
General feed Canary — neutral and fast, with small accents of medbase and lower treble. Of course, to consider it in the first place given the price, but that looks good.
Bass is slightly accentuated in the midbass region, which adds to the supply weight, which is mostly offset by HF, so the feeling of bloat that range does not occur. Resolution bass good attack, of course, not super fast, but the effect of weakness or smearing no, as it feels lack of power (not surprising). Not the most textured bass, but the instruments don’t fall in a heap, remaining respecively.
The mid-frequency range is transmitted neutrally and impartially, with a decent level of detail. Anything the processor does not add, so the emotions must be, or else they must take on headphones. Imaginary scene slightly wider than average, but quite shallow, however the division plans done properly.
HF also have a cold monitor feed, Canary does not attempt to soften or hide, reflecting what is in the record. Therefore, the owners of bright headphones or sensitive to the top of the band should listen to before they buy. The positive side is that the “top” there is a well balances the bottom, giving the sound balance and providing a good swing.
Compatibility
As in the Canary there is no switch coefficient gain, it will not be the best choice for the most sensitive IEM. His path — the full-size models, including the most tight (without fanaticism in the face of the top istinam, of course). However, owners of particularly sensitive plugs should have an adapter attenuator, it often solves all the problems with overly powerful sources.
Stylistically combine versatile enough selection of headphones it is possible to adjust for all tastes, building thus the budget set. Of course, more expensive devices will sound in many styles better, but when you account for every 50 dollars more than ever I realize that the main thing in music is music, and the level of Daart Canary is more than enough for enjoying it.
Traditional tracks are examples
Slayer — Not of This God. One of the pillars and legends of the genre thrash metal for a long time and confidently straddled the topic of anti-religious propaganda and stick it in with his work. However, we love what we do, not for profound content, but for the tight and technical signature sound, which they repeatedly provide. Daart Canary quite confident to cope with this track, offering and aggressive guitar and tight driving percussion.
John Carpenter — Obsidian. Who would have thought that one of the best Directors of horror films will be a great composer? I purposely did not choose something from the soundtrack he wrote for the movie, and took the song from independent album, “Lost Themes”. The youngest of babies Yulong copes well with the oppressive and disturbing atmosphere of this track, passing all its nuances and fine details.
Wardruna — RunaljoD. The final track is the epic trilogy from Norwegian masters of the Northern folk. Ragnarok was left behind, everything is destroyed and what lies ahead is unknown. The whole album in General and this track in particular turned an atmospheric deep drums, interesting melodies, choral singing — all shimmers and sparkles, carrying the listener along. The hero of today’s review skillfully accents, adding a composition impressive.
Insights
Yulong have managed to achieve good quality which not requires compulsory reservations on the price, and only in combination with the cost — Daart Canary generally bypasses any competition. Of course, it is not optimized to work with sensitive IEM, but they are already full of devices, inexpensive but powerful solution for a full-sized headphone on the market not enough. Now it is and beautiful it looks.
