Samsung Electronics will likely release a foldable smartphone in the third quarter of 2017. Reported KoreaHerald Korean edition, citing “informed” sources.
According to the source, the device will have a flexible display with the ability to develop. When folded, the display will be located on the outer surface and the device can operate as a smartphone, and unfolded — to be used as a 7-inch tablet. Samsung plans to distribute more than 100 thousand of these folding devices in the third quarter.
Samsung has completed the development of smartphones with displays inside in the folded state, and in August of 2016 has begun to develop foldable smartphones with external displays that don’t require to deploy the device for use.
Note that on the day the Chinese sources reported that Samsung is currently testing in China foldable smartphone Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy X1 X1 Plus with flexible displays being developed under the project codenamed Project Valley.
