Used to be you clever as you 272 hp from a 3 liter block is fetched, but times are changing, and so are such capabilities are now even accessible for driepittertjes with the contents of a carton of milk.

“As many horsepower per litre, that is going to still have this piece?‘ This logical question is widely held if there is again a new downsizetopper on the scene appears. The question is how many miles the current downsizemotoren able to run is one that the coming years will be answered. This is the load that the engine is exposed (as with any other engine) is decisive. After all: with a maximum power of 150 hp/liter or more does not mean that this power is always made clear.

Having said this, the developments in the drivelines do not stand still. The conventional concept of the internal combustion engine is also in the year 2015 almost everywhere central, but it is increasingly helped by turbo – or superchargers, and also electrical power will get a bigger role. This last not only in the form of plug-in concepts in which the car is a piece of(you) fully electric drive, but also with the e-turbo from 0-rpm support to give.

Volkswagen unveiled this week in Vienna not only a new 6-litre bi-turbo W12, there was also attention for the smallest member, the 1.0 TSI direcilinder, which is based on Volkswagen’s new (four-cylinder) EA211 engine.

VW 1.0 TSI

This 999 cc, storey driepitter (codenamed 1.0 R3 12v) starts at 60 hp, but according to the men, the engineers with all the bells and whistles to drive up to a whopping 272 bhp:

With the genes of the Polo WRC’s rally engine, this power unit is capable of generating 272 PS and 270 Nm or torque from just one litre of displacement thanks to a monoscroll turbocharger and an e-booster. “A nice example of just how much potential combustion engines still have in them”

In itself, this would not come as a surprise: Volvo revealed recently a concept that 450 hp from 2 liters of volume, and already in 2012, claimed the experts that a doubling of the current capabilities within 10 years is not inconceivable.
