Long before the world was allowed to make with the Single Frame Grille, came across this beauty the roads to perk up.
The title, according to not for nothing on an Audi logo, and not on an Audi, the brand built in the late ’50’s after all, no cars under its own name. The Audi logo as we know it is actually the logo of Auto Union, that the relationship between Audi, DKW, Wanderer and Horch had to act out.
After the Second world War came, initially, only DKW back to life. To the expensive cars Horch, Wanderer and Audi during the inter-war period were, it was in the late ’40s and early ’50s all the way no question. To the betaalbere DKW’s with their dirty two-cylinder tweetakten more. On the nose of these small cars are not only the green-and-white DKW logo, but also the four rings of Auto Union.
The model is evaluated with the years, and got halfway through the ’50s, even a small cylinder. In 1958, the DKW 3=6 with a slightly larger engine and the car was now sold as the Auto Union 1000. No DKW logos to be seen, only the famous four rings in the grille.
A year later came this beautiful 1000 Sp (of Sport) to strengthen the ranks. Still with three-cylinder, but with a body not entirely coincidentally, in a shrunken ’55 Ford Thunderbird appeared. In those years there were many American soldiers stationed in Germany and Auto Union was hoping with the Coupe and Roadster this target group. That worked but at the sharing, eventually were only about 6640 copies were built. That the performance is little appealing were (top speed: 140 km/h) and not really consistent with the smooth appearance, were undoubtedly to blame. Today, the 1000 Sp is a much rarer occurrence, and a sought after classic.
This 1000-series, incidentally, was the first and last postwar car which was sold under the Auto Union brand. Its successor, the significantly more modern F102, was again just a DKW. This car was also the direct basis for the Audi F103, the first car of the modern Audi. These cars were actually developed under the direction of Mercedes-Benz, not knowing thereby laying the foundation for a brand that, years later, one of its two largest competitors will be.
