Max’ move from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing surprised friend and enemy in the F1. Yet, it is in the history of the highest race series, it more often happens that drivers during the season in a car from another team stepped up. We explain a few examples for you.
In the early 50’s was the F1 was not yet the over-regulated keursleven that it is today. At various places in the world were organised races and if you had enough money but not enough friends to play golf, tennis or a game of croquet to do in the weekends, you could find a big bowl of buy and you register. Nowadays you get as a team a penalty if a race is skipped, because Bernie has contractually obligated each race weekend on the trot with two cars in the same color scheme. In the old days you could also have a race to skip. In that looser approach and come to it much more in the middle of the season suddenly with another car at the start. In 1954 reed, Juan Manuel Fangio (video), for example, part-time, respectively, with a Maserati 250 F and the Mercedes W196 to his second world title.
But, let the nostalgia behind us and look to what more recent predecessors of Max:
Jan Lammers 1980: ATS and Ensign
To begin with, these other driver their own soil. Especially after Jan in the 1978 European Formula 3 championship to his name, wrote it seemed the world even at his feet to lie. But four years and some unfortunate choices later, his Formula 1 career is actually already over. Ok, in 1992, he came after ten years of absence to come back in F1 for two races with the ailing March team. That is a nice footnote for statisticians, but Jack could at the time not to laugh, because they saw in 1993, his last F1 chance go up in smoke because the team fell. As a consolation prize gets Jan this list, because in 1980 but switched he from an ATS to an Ensign. Points earned not on. Would rather have the man who is still (just) the best Dutch F1 qualifying position ever, to his name in this list stood for a switch to Ferrari or Renault. During his F1 time seemed at different times to the opportunities to belong, but it eventually came not from the ground.
Roberto Moreno 1991: Benetton, Jordan and Minardi
Roberto ‘Pupo’ Moreno was a real zitjeshopper. In 1990, he transferred all of EuroBrun to Benetton. In 1991 he made it even gayer, less than three teams destroying he that year. He started at Benetton, but when there by Flavio Briatore, a certain Michael Schumacher was recorded if Roberto leave. A typical course of affairs for the second drivers of teams where Flava Flav the scepter waved. Fortunately for the Brazilian driver had the team of Eddie Jordan, where Michael, after one race, a driver is needed and there could Roberto get on. After a uitvalbeurt and a tenth place, he was also in Eddie, however, not welcome any more. But in the last race of the year was Roberto again, this time sitting in a Minardi.
Michael Schumacher 1991: Jordan and Benetton
Well, for the sake of completeness because we are the ‘Rekordmeister’ already mentioned. The story has been many times told. Schumacher was in 1991 an opportunity in Jordan because the Belgian driver Bertrand Gachot in the lockup disappeared due to a pepper spray incident. After one race saw Flava Flav his talent and knew enough. The rest is history. Now we can only hope that the progress in medical science, the red baron again a bit on top helps.
JJ Lehto 1994: Benetton and Sauber
Probably not coincidentally, been a driver of the Benetton team in this list. This time it goes to Jyrki Juhani Järvilehto, better known as JJ Lehto. Dutch fans know him, perhaps because he was in 1994, the second Benetton shared with Max’s father Jos. Lehto was in the beginning of the year has not yet recovered from a broken nekwervel and so he missed a couple of races. The four races below, he should be in the car, but then he was for race seven and race fourteen replaced by Jos. The last two races of the year reed Johnny Herbert in the second Benetton. Lehto was given the opportunity to move to Sauber. With the Swiss team, it was actually intended that Andrea de Cesaris the year: heavy crashed Karl Wendlinger to replace. The Italian veteran with the crazy eyes had not counted on and was on vacation. Thus, reed Lehto two more races for the team for which he also in 1993 came out. After 1994, it was about the F1 career of the Fin, which in his later life, yet a tragic accident with a boat went through. Also, the long F1 career of de Cesaris was in fact after 1994 is over. Hopefully he has, however, entertained on holiday.
Mika Salo 1999 BAR and Ferrari
Still a Fin in the list. Mika Salo served for many years as a supersub for Ferrari. In 1999 he was given the chance to for the legendary team to come out after Michael Schumacher got his leg broke. As those days was usual, the team with the scarlet-red cars all the arrows on one man to win the championship. After the failure of Schumacher, was that automatically Eddie Irvine. For the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim qualified Salo is as the fourth, just before Irvine as the fifth started. With the end of the race in sight came the ferraris in the lead, with Salo still for Irvine. The faster Salo went meekly to the side and finished one second behind Irvine as the second. It turned out to be the only chance to have been in his F1 career to win a race. Irvine lost the championship in the final race of Mika Hakkinen…
Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jean Alesi, 2001: Jordan and Prost
In addition to Schumacher and Moreno the only other “straight-swap” in this list. Red Bull and Toro Rosso have a separate position because the two teams are with same owner. In teams, so it is (slightly) more sense for riders with each other to exchange. The driver-exchange between Jordan and Prost, however, was a lot weirder. Frentzen was in 2001, dismissed by Jordan in the middle of the season and it seemed that Ricardo Zonta would substitute him. Suddenly there were rumors to above that there may be an exchange with Alesi on the lift. Alesi drove for Prost, a French driver with a French team. In 1989 Alesi, however, the title in the F3000 (the current GP2 for the very young readers) won the team of Jordan. Apparently weighed that sentiment for him heavy, because with the consent of the teambazen was the switch done.
Trulli 2004: Renault and Toyota
The skill-cannon Jarno Trulli was the next ‘victim’ of Flavio Briatore in 2004. The man who, in the qualification’s often faster than his car and maybe because of that the stamp as a slow racer got stuck on won note in 2004, the Monaco Grand Prix for Renault, his only racewinst ever. Team-mate Alonso did that year no races to win, although he was the previous season had won in Hungary. Nevertheless knew Flava Flav all that Alonso’s future was with the team and dumped he in last a few races before the end of the season. Trulli was the last races picked up by Toyota, where he was mainly after 2004 is still a rather successful period knew. For Toyota, he obtained a number of poles, among other things, for the historic Grand Prix of America in 2005 and scored here and there, a stage. No wins however, because racing is a different thing than qualify.
Sebastian Vettel 2007: BMW-Sauber and Scuderia Toro Rosso
You would almost forget, but also ‘Seb’ reed in one season for two different teams. After the horror crash of Robert Kubica in Montreal had to be the Pool of the medici family, the next race is in America to his frustration serving. Sebastian, who as the third driver of the BMW team in the free training, often with little fuel fast runs should do and, therefore, not rarely, on Friday, the rankings leader, got the opportunity of his life. In America, he was allowed Kubica to replace. The German did this meritorious and scored immediately in a point. It may however be noted that his team-mate Heidfeld was on his way to the podium in the race, but in the 56th round broke down with technical malheur. Vettel pushed this a place to P8. Because Kubica returned and both he and Heidfeld performed well there was not a direct view of a racezitje with the team for the season of 2008. Gerhard Berger Toro Rosso smelled his chance, pushed Scott Speed to the side and explained to the young Sebastian for his team. In 2008, the STR3 is actually a RBR4 with a Ferrari engine in the back and knew Vettel the rain-soaked Grand Prix of Monza on his name to write. The first really big success of the later champion.
Fisichella 2009: Force India and Ferrari
After a long career came in 2009 finally that moment where Fisichella his entire life had been waiting for. A phone call from Ferrari for the red team Formula 1 drive. It was the result of a great race in Spa, where the Force India, typically a car for, at most, marginal dots that year, suddenly went well. Fisichella made maximum use of this speed, put the car on pole and finished the race second behind a ontkentende Kimi were times that at Spa that year, reed as you always would like to see. Badoer, the replacement of Mass for that year, his accident had in Hungary, reed, meanwhile, not a dent in a stick of butter. On the straight he is not always at full throttle. Ferrari had no other choice than him out of his misery. The F60, however, proved to be a tricky car, because ‘both physical and’ could not really pots to break. Good results he got. Sorry he had however also not, because those few races in the red suits it more.
To the extent that this bite-size piece of reading material. And now to wait to see what Max will make of his switch.
