May 13 in history of technology: the programming language Turbo C, first race of the world championship in a class Formula-1, the supercomputer SAGA–220 and OLED TVs Sony

13 may 1987 released the first version of the programming environment Turbo C. It was developed by Bob Jervis (Bob Jervis) for Borland, which had already released the popular Turbo Pascal and experimented with other languages. Environment Turbo C allowed you to write, compile and run the program and it was inexpensive, the distribution took a total of 384 kilobytes. However, the same distribution that its Pascal version, it is not received.

Already in 2006, the company Embarcadero Technologies, which became the successor of Borland, re-released Turbo C and Turbo C++, and made them free.

13 may 2011 in India was launched on the supercomputer SAGA–220 performance, 220 teraflops. This project is still actively used by the Indian space research organization (mainly for simulation of hydrodynamic processes). In total, the supercomputer has more than four hundred Quad-core Intel Xeon processors and the same amount of GPU NVIDIA Tesla 2070, connected by high-speed bus. It is noteworthy also that the SAGA–220 was designed by the Indian Space centre Vikram Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre). Before his appearance the most productive computer of India was Eka HP with a peak performance of 132 teraflops.

13 may 1950 saw the debut of the first race of the world championship in a class Formula-1. Racing series kicked off at Silverstone, which was built on the site of the airfield for the British bombers. The structure of the championship, of course, was not original to the European Grand Prix, the organisers have added a race in the U.S. “the Indianapolis 500”, with its regulations and pilots.

In the opening race, the pilots have overcome 70 laps, and the race lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes. The winner was Giuseppe Farina, and all three podium places went to the team of Alfa Romeo’s pre-war “158” model. Italian Maserati, Talbot Lago French out and the British team ERA and Alta are unable to occupy prize-winning places, as Ferrari has decided not to participate in the debut race of the world championship.

Cars in the early stages of Formula 1, as a rule, was based on the longitudinal tubular frame and had an incredibly gluttonous inline eight-cylinder engine capacity of 350 HP and above.

It is worth noting that the history “Royal races” (informally styled as Formula 1) by the time of the opening of the world Cup counted for almost half a century, and since 1900, on a regular basis were held competitions for the international Cup — the prototype of the modern Grand Prix.

13 may 2014 Sony officially stopped the development of TVs with OLED screens. Instead, the company focused on producing LCD models. And the year before that Panasonic has discontinued the manufacture of plasma and has joined forces with Sony for the production of large OLED panels. In December 2013 was even presented prototypes, however, none of the joint initiative of the Japanese did not. Now both companies produce only LCD TVs.

About full decommissioning of the project, however, is not necessary to speak. Sony have kept their jobs all professionals working on OLED panels, so it is possible that they will be put into production in a few years when 4K resolution will become the lot of the budget models, and the production of organic LEDs will be cheaper.
