In twelve years time a Spyker from 1907 to re-build? There are real devotees who have time and patience. Autoblog spoke with Rob Spyker from New zealand.
Rob is a veterinarian and has in recent years part-time private practice and worked, so the other half of his time to devote to the bringing together of a hundred-year-old Spyker.
Once there were four Spykers to New Zealand. Three of those Spykers were on our way to Christchurch (south island). In that city grew Rob Spyker. His father was of Dutch origin and had its name adjusted from Spijker to Spyker. Did the same the brand Spyker ever in order to gain more clientele from abroad to interest. Or the founders (Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker), and Rob actually related to each other is unknown.
The father of Rob wanted a Spyker possess, but that was a dream that never became a reality. Rob on the other hand, is a quest started, to eventually (via-via), an old chassis. Just then, there was also an old engine block on the head is tapped, both the chassis as the motor comes from the type of 15/22 Hp. However, it is not clear whether this also ever in the same car were. Now the ingredients were there, he had only time. But that time was not a problem, thanks to his own business and flexible working hours.
More than ten years he worked Rob, this Spyker 15/22 Hp. To the car it may be possible to build -it is probably more of a reconstruction than a restoration, he’s also been in the Netherlands. He has, among other things, a day at Louwman went to see all the details. He has also had a lot of contact with Stijnus Schotte, owner of The Autostal and Spyker enthusiast. This Dutchman also has a Spyker 15/22 Hp from 1907, in possession and therefore could be of good help with the restoration. Stijnus is also the owner of the Spyker barn-find from French Guinea.
Rob and Stijnus together in 2005, in the original Peking to Paris route, at the same time with four similar cars from 1907. Rob also wants to ever ride long distances with his own Spyker, but there should still be time to find. After the earthquakes in Christchurch a few years back, is he busy with the restoration of his house with the car. The car has anyway still only a few miles, Rob’s house is on a steep hill and it is quite risky to go for a testrondje to do. There is always a trailer involved. The engine runs good, a movie of that you can see below.
On the question of whether he is the Spyker wants to sell, he answered resolutely, no. It remains an heirloom for his family. However, there are many interested parties, in which he was even an offer from Victor Muller would have turned into. If he has the car ever want to sell it then it will be a nice price tag deliver.
