And that everything comes to road safety.

It is clear from the research “Geeltijden” by consultancy firm Goudappel Coffeng, that the road safety benefit as the traffic lights longer on orange. One has at least a half a second more to decide. Continue or stop. Legally speaking, this means orange (not yellow) “stop unless this is not reasonably possible”, in normal people language: a dot of gas or on the brake.

Well, one of the conclusions is that a red drive in each case is dangerous. Whether it’s 0.3 seconds or 3 seconds after the red of the traffic light. Fine, at least we know that we’re doing. However, there is still a lot of people by red and the traffic light longer orange, the number of roodrijders with 50% to be reduced. The “geeltijden” are as follows: at 50 km/h from 3 to 3.5 seconds, to 60 km/h to 4 seconds at 70 mph to 4.5 seconds and from 80 to 5 seconds.

Furthermore, in the advisory report, a nice distinction is made between can’t (technically not possible yet to apply the brakes) and don’t want to stop. This last group would now be better addressed, because the number of people that can stop, now all the greater. There is, however, noted that the longer on orange go to the “credibility” of the legal meaning of orange can harm. Orange = stop. Oh well, anything for safety right?
