Jongeren willen nog steeds een auto
In contrast to a lot of messages that young people prefer a tablet or smartphone than a car, is the car still a very popular object among young people, as research shows.

The car ownership among the so-called Generation Y (born between 1980 and 2000), that is a fact. By many “researchers” and “journalists” that was the assumption associated that young people for example prefer a iPhone than a driver’s license. Scientific research of the KiM now shows that there is absolutely no evidence of a reduced autowens among young people. It appears that the need for mobility has changed and that has a number of very concrete reasons.

Fact: there are more and more students. That therefore tend to live in the city. where also studied. Since study already expensive enough, is often made use of a bike or public TRANSPORT card. So there is less need at that age to buy a car, “happy” is the government currently engaged in to study, to discourage so perhaps this cause within a few years would be offset.

A second reason that young people are less cars to buy is the crisis. Yes, the c-word, we should call it. Apart from the higher unemployment rates among young people in economically difficult times much more difficult to have a car to get here.

Social media would also have a negative influence on the autowens of young people. It turns out, however crap: young people indicate that they are more new people to get to know and easier to make appointments with others through social media. The mobiliteitswens in doing so has only increased.

As young people once ‘settling down’ takes the need for mobility increase significantly and there will be more cars purchased. Young Dutch people attach much value to a car and see the car as a statement about their identity. The situational factors that cause fewer cars to be bought, but the desire to have a car to own is still very large. The chances are that with the attract of the economy mobiliteitswens again and young again, more cars will buy.

“Young Dutch people choose not for car but for the car later.” said the conclusion of the study. The complete dossier and a summary of the research can be found here.
