Google’s Banned Flash From Display Ads

Google's Banned Flash From Display Ads

Another nail in Flash’s coffin: Google has announced that it’s going to stop supporting the plugin in its pervasive AdWords and DoubleClick advertizing services. Instead, companies will have to use HTML5.

The ban comes into effect for ad uploads in June this year, and existing Flash ads will refuse to run from next January. For now, video ads using Flash will remain, but clearly their future looks uncertain.

It’s good news. Flash is awful—insecure, irrelevant, a reminder of a bygone internet age—and it’s only really ads that draw out its long and painful death. It’s time to stamp it out for good.
