After Samsung, the smartphone market has already been conquered, does it now a throw back to the title of top supplier of batteries in accupakketten.
BMW buys since 2009 lithium-ion batteries at Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of the Samsung Group. Now the production of the electric i3 and i8 in motion, it was time to bring the deal to expand. Today, both parties in Seoul, therefore, a new agreement was signed, with which several billions of euro’s are involved. A specific amount was not mentioned.
More cars with plug connector
BMW secures this that in the coming time, enough lithium-ion cells provided for in the accupakketten of the i3, i8, and future elektromodellen. Also regular hybrids, such as the upcoming X5 plug-in hybrid, will be equipped. BMW expects that their demand for the batteries by 20 to 30 percent will increase in the next two years.
At the presentation of the deal was by BMW executive Klaus Draeger still something remarkable called, namely, that the Germans battery technology of BMW and Samsung like with other brands to share:
“If Mercedes called us, we would be happy to find a way with Samsung SDI to supply them with battery cells.”
The share of battery technology, that we hear the last time more often. More than a month ago announced Elon Musk in a meme-inspired blog post even though that Tesla is a part of his patents, opened for third parties. Fideel of them, so at first glance, but the true reason is that both Tesla if BMW economies of scale to create. And that is the best if you have other car brands convince to your hardware to use.
Coming back to Samsung SDI: this is also the batterijleverancier for Fiat, that the battery technology applied in electric 500e and the Ritz. Renault takes on turn of battery cells by LG Chem, and Tesla has for many years been a customer at Panasonic. Samsung SDI supplies also batteries to rival Apple.
BMW and Samsung SDI have to close the miljardendeal. Smile boys!
