Even those who have no Audi fan, have to grudgingly admit: the brand has done very well with the A3. In spite of the floorpan of the Volkswagen Golf, paying customers going to be extra for the four rings, the better the finish and the experience.

Perhaps even cleverer is that Audi, the “less sexy” five-door variant is still just as attractive managed to make as the driedeurs. Audi did that by giving him the name Sportback and the styling is more in the direction of the Avants to attract.

The second generation A3 for a relatively long time on the market of 2003 until 2012, but received a facelift in 2008. There was a wide range of engines available, a 1.6 with 100 hp to the 2.5 TFSI five cylinder with 340 hp in the RS3. At the end of the life cycle were only turbo engines available.

Offer used cars
The offer in the Netherlands consists of a small 1500 copies, of which:

• 5% is convertible.
• 50% is the five-door Sportback.
• Approximately 20% of the offer has a DSG automatic transmission.
• Only 2% has Quattro all-wheel drive.
• A third has a built-in navigation system.
• Most have alloy wheels.
• More than 20% has a S-line sports package.
• Prices from about 7,000 to 25,000 euros.

Pros

• Stable, and thus higher purchase price.
• Premium.
• Wide range of modern engines.
• Available as three-, five-door and as a convertible.

Issues

• The atmospheric 1.6 with 100 ? hp makes the A3 a little right.
• Dual mass flywheel when handbakken; please note vibrating link switch.
• Dark metallic colours (especially black) damage quickly.
• The S-tronic transmission is susceptible to failure, the clutch plates may be around 100,000 km are worn out (expensive!)
• Hinges glove box are vulnerable, not too full up.
• TDI’s: the EGR is being polluted, can be cleaned, unless the problem returns.
• Turbo: Timing belt 2.0 TDI should be every 4 years or 100,000 km to be replaced.
