Many concepts has Bentley not made in its long history, but in the ’90s brought the British two from: the sporting Hunaudieres (’99) and Java (’94), a luxurious and nimble cabrio.
The Java was signed in a time that Bentley was an independent car brand was (4 years later, would VAG the brand initially), for the design signed hoofdesigner Graham Hull and the Design Research Associates. A look at the concept learns quickly that the inspiration for the Continental R from was achieved, although in particular the front was quite different.
Under the hood of the Java was a twin-turbo 3.5 liter V8, the Bentley in 5.6 seconds from 0-96 km/h voortstuwde. The power went to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic, today we are already at double the number of gears. There is much change in 20 years time… 17 inch light metal adorning the cabinets are, at present, there is already a larger diameter below the Opel Astra, but at the time it was still strong.
Not only the engine was small for Bentley concepts, also the dimensions were 4750 x 1820 x 1420 mm modest. To a further elaboration it never came, probably due to lack of money, although evil tongues claim that BMW is a stick for the Java stuck. The Germans offered a 4.4-litre V8 for the Arnage, and one says that they have another engine did not. This is probably far-fetched, the Java, there could also be a BMW V8.
Much later, after Volkswagen brand to his list had been added, the Continental GTC, somewhat a spiritual successor of the Java, they are the pieces larger and heavier.
It remained only a concept? No. The Sultan of Brunei, the wealthy gaybasher who at the time was still avid cars collected, showed his interest, and took for themselves 13 copies in various body styles. So there was also a coupe and an Estate version to the garages of the oliestaatje (which is not very far from Java) is sent, where they probably still are… Fortunately, there are a few grainy photos of, that we through Bentleyspotting opduikelden.
